Robin Williams appears in one of his final movie roles in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. In it, he reprises his role as the heroic U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt. Near the end of the film, Teddy says his final good-byes to Larry, the museum security guard. It’s tender and touching and all the more poignant in light of Williams’ death on August 11 in Paradise Cay, California.

During his career as a stand-up comedian and actor, Williams starred in serious roles in movies like Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, Good Morning Vietnam, August Rush and Insomnia. But his career also included many comedy roles for the actor. Along with the Night in the Museum franchise, he took roles in movies like Hook, License to Wed, Mrs. Doubtfire and Flubber. The actor also voiced characters in Aladdin, Robots, and Happy Feet.

Comedian Mickey Rooney also starred with Williams in the Night at the Museum movies. He passed away on April 6 of this year at age 93. He began his career in 1926 in the short film Not to Be Trusted. He starred alongside Elizabeth Taylor in the 1944 movie National Velvet. His resume also includes films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Pete’s Dragon, The Black Stallion, Babe: Pig in the City, The Muppets and voice work in The Fox and the Hound.

Stephanie Moseley was found dead in her apartment on December 8 at age 30—the victim of a murder suicide. The gifted young dancer from British Columbia Canada made a name for herself in recent years with acting roles in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, Mirror Mirror and Sparkle.

Born in 1967 in New York, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s career began in earnest in the early 1990s. During his career he became recognized for his talents as an actor, director and producer in both film and theater. The actor died in February. His latest role was as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games movies. According to the studio he had one major scene left to film for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. But the company has made plans to rework the script. During his prolific career he also starred in movies like The Master, A Late Quartet, Moneyball, The Invention of Lying, and Twister. He also took roles in Mission: Impossible III and Doubt and played the lead role of Truman Capote in the movie Capote.

Actor James Garner found success as an actor in both television, starring in several series including Maverick and The Rockford Files. He also made a name for himself in film. He died at age 86 in Los Angeles. Some of his film roles included The Ultimate Gift and The Notebook. Garner also appeared in movies like Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Space Cowboys and did voice work in Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Lord Richard Attenborough was born in Cambridge England. He died at age 90. As an actor, he played a man intent on creating the world’s most unique amusement park in the movie Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. He starred as Sir William Cecil in the Victorian film Elizabeth and an English Ambassador in Hamlet. He also takes on the iconic role of Kris Kringle in the remake of Miracle on 34th Street. As a producer and director he won two Academy Awards for the 1982 film Gandhi.

Standing at 6’ 3”, James Rebhorn had over 100 film, television and stage credits at the time of his death in March of this year. He was currently starring in the television series White Collar and Homeland. A few of his recent film credits include The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Real Steel, The Box, The International. He also starred in movies such as How to Eat Fried Worms, Far from Heaven, and Lorenzo’s Oil.

Director Mike Nichols died November 19 at age 83. The director, along with others helped start the famous “Second City Improv” company. He took the director’s chair in movies Charlie Wilson’s War, Wit, Primary Colors, The Graduate and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Along with filmmaking, Nichols was heavily involved in breeding and raising Arabian horses. When it came to his role as a director, he once said, “It’s not the film-maker’s job to explain his technique, but to tell his story the best way he can.” At the time of his death he was married to news anchor Diane Sawyer.

Joan Rivers may be best known for her acerbic wit. Born in Brooklyn in 1933, the comedian/actor passed away in New York City on September 4. While she may be best known for her television work including her roles as writer and actress on The Joan Rivers Show, Rivers also made appearances in movies like in Iron Man 3, The Smurfs, Shrek 2 and The Muppets Take Manhattan.

Other notable celebrity deaths this year included Lauren Bacall, Shirley Temple, Eli Wallace, and Maya Angelou.
