Coming to Netflix: July 2021
Continuing its run, Netflix has a full release calendar this month with plenty of familiar films and a big crop of new movies.
July 1:
Air Force One: Harrison Ford stars as an American President who defends his family and staff when terrorists hijack Air Force One. Restricted, Grade: C+
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me In this spy spoof, British spy Austin Powers and his American colleague Felicity Shagwell face off against the aptly named Dr. Evil. PG-13, Grade: D+
Austin Powers in Goldmember Saving the world yet again, British agent Austin Powers pursues Dr. Evil and fellow villain Goldmember. PG-13, Grade: D+
Dennis the Menace Based on the timeless comic strip, this film sees the incurably inquisitive Dennis crossing paths with a devious crook and curmudgeonly neighbor. PG, Grade: C+
Hampstead. Diane Keaton plays an American widow surprised to find herself building a relationship with an eccentric Englishman fighting developers who will tear down his home. Our review will be posted on release date. PG-13
Kung Fu Panda Yearning to become an admired kung fu fighter, Po the panda bear soon finds himself battling alongside the greatest martial arts masters of the age. PG, Grade: B+
Life as We Know It When young Sophie’s parents die, her godparents are her new guardians. The problem? They barely know each other and don’t like what they know. PG-13, Grade: C
Mary Magdalene Heavily fictionalized, this film offers a take on Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus Christ’s best known followers. Restricted, Grade: B-
Memoirs of a Geisha Sold into the trade as a child, Chiyo grows up to become the most celebrated geisha of her day. But her success comes at a cost. PG-13. Grade: C-
Mortal Kombat This adaptation of the video game features three martial arts fighters who battle ruthless aliens determined to take over the world. PG-13, Grade: D
Mother’s DayThis ensemble film attempts to cover the breadth of mothers’ experiences by telling the stories of several moms, in a variety of family configurations. PG-13, Grade: B-
No Strings Attached Adam and Emma are friends who decide that what they really want is a commitment-free sexual relationship. But it’s not as easy as they think. Restricted, Content details only
Ophelia. This modern remake of Shakespeare’s classic tale is told from the perspective of Hamlet’s beloved as played by Daisy Ridley. Our review will be posted on release date. PG-13

Spanglish Working for the Clasky family, Flor soon becomes aware of the tensions and challenges beneath the surface. PG-13, Grade: C+
Star Trek This 2009 reboot of the classic franchise sees a very young Captain Kirk facing a genocidal Romulan with the support of a highly skeptical Spock. PG-13, Grade: B+
Stuart Little When an orphaned mouse is adopted by human parents, he has a new brother to get to know – and the family’s cat. PG, Grade; B_
Sword of Trust Four people set off to collect their inheritances only to discover a sword that could prove that the South really won the Civil War. Our review will be posted on the 1st. Restricted
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby Ricky Bobby has been at the top of the NASCAR circuit for so long that he’s getting arrogant. Then a new Formula One driver offers some stiff competition. PG-13, Grade: D+
The Best of Enemies. When the African American elementary school in Durham, North Carolina burns down, integration is fast tracked. Civil rights activist Ann Atwater is asked to lead the community council – along with the head of the local chapter of the KKK. PG-13, Grade: A-
The Karate Kid Bullied by his classmates in his new California neighborhood, Daniel gets a hand when the local maintenance man takes him in hand and introduces him to karate. PG, Grade: B
The Karate Kid II In this sequel, Daniel and Mr. Miyagi travel to Okinawa where the two wind up in the middle of an old feud. PG, Grade: B
Underworld: Awakening Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, the vampire warrior, again threatening humanity. Restricted, content details only.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans This prequel reveals the origins of the feud between the Death Dealers (aristocratic vampires) and the Lycans they enslaved. Restricted, content details only
What Dreams May Come After a grieving woman commits suicide, her husband searches hell so he can bring her to be with him in heaven. PG-13, Grade: C+
Zathura: A Space Adventure Two brothers play a mysterious board game that launches them into the far reaches of the universe. Now the squabbling sibs are going to have to cooperate if they want to return home. PG, Grade: B+
July 2:
Fear Street: 1994 Netflix Original. The first of a trilogy based on the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine, this slasher flick follows four teenagers who encounter a centuries-old evil murderous force. Restricted
Snowpiercer A global climate disaster destroys everyone on earth except for the passengers on the Snowpiercer. But after years on the constantly moving train, hostilities and rebellions emerge as class divisions widen. Restricted, content details only
July 7:
Brick Mansions An undercover cop and a convicted cop killer work together to bring down a crime lord who has aimed a neutron bomb at downtown Detroit. PG-13, Grade: D+
Major Grom: Plague Doctor Netflix Original. In this subtitled Russian film, Major Grom of the St. Petersburg police is stumped by a new killer. Masked, and calling himself the Plague Doctor, the vigilante swears to cleanse the city of the “plague” of corrupt elites who use their money to escape punishment for their misdeeds. Unrated.
This Little Love of Mine Netflix Original. A lawyer returns home to persuade an old friend to take over a family company. But he insists that he’ll consider the offer only if she’ll unwind and have some fun. Unrated
July 9:
Fear Street: 1978 Netflix Original. Summer camp turns deadly when a Shadyside resident becomes possessed with homicidal mania. Restricted
How I Became a Superhero Netflix Original. French. This sci-fi story imagines a Paris where superheroes live among their fellow citizens. When a new drug that offers superpowers hits the streets the consequences are unpredictable. Unrated
The Water Man Terrified that his sick mother is going to die, a young boy runs into the mountains of the Pacific Northwest on a desperate quest for the Water Man, who purportedly has the ability to cheat death. PG, Grade: B+
July 14:
Gunpowder Milkshake Netflix Original. Three generations of women work together to protect each other against a world which wishes to harm them. Restricted
The Guide to the Perfect Family Netflix Original. A couple in Quebec struggles to raise their family. Unrated
July 16:
Fear Street: 1666 Netflix Original. The dark origins of the murderous curse that has haunted Shadyside for over 300 years are finally revealed. Restricted
Deep Netflix Original. Four Thai students are recruited as subjects in a drug test with just one catch: they can’t sleep. Ever. Unrated
Twilight: Bella Swan is fascinated by the new student who starts attending her high school. But there’s way more to Edward Cullen than meets the eye in this vampire-themed romantic drama. PG-13, Grade: C

Chernobyl 1986 (a.k.a. Chernobyl: Abyss) Netflix Original. This Russian drama centers on a firefighter sent to deal with the aftermath of the disaster at the Soviet nuclear plant. Unrated
Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans Netflix Original. This feature length film follows the heroes of the Trollhunters TV series as they battle the Arcane Order for control of the magic they all share. TV-Y7
July 23:
The Last Letter from Your Lover Netflix Original When a young reporter finds love letters from the 1960s, she sets out to find the young lovers but her quest impacts her own life. PG
Blood Red Sky Netflix Original. A sick woman on a plane transforms into something else in this horror film. TV-MA
July 29:
Resort to Love: Recovering from a career disaster, Erica winds up working as a musician at an island resort. Then her ex-fiancé arrives with his wedding party and Erica will have to sing on his big day. Unrated
July 30:
