2 Oscar Winners Your Family Can Watch

12 Years a Slave (Best Picture), Dallas Buyers Club (Best Actor in Leading Role) and Blue Jasmine (Best Actress in Leading Role) may have won the big awards at the 2014 Oscars but they aren’t exactly family friendly films.

Thankfully a couple of movies with some family appeal did win awards at the Academy’s celebration. Gravity, best suited for older teens and adults, walked out of the Hollywood & Highland Center with the biggest haul from the award ceremony. The film grabbed Oscars for Best Cinematography, Original Score, Directing, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. This space adventure stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts who are left floating above Earth after their ship is bombarded with space junk. While it failed to win one of the big three awards, this film sets a new standard for the genre.

Disney’s animated tale Frozen won Best Animated Feature and brought home a golden statue for Best Original Song—“Let It Go”. (Check out these covers of “Let It Go” and a weatherman’s parody.) Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, this story finds a young girl named Anna trekking through a wintery landscape with a shy mountain man while searching for her missing sister. Luckily a little snowman named Olaf and a goofy reindeer provide comic relief in this animation that adds one more royal to Disney’s stable of princesses.
