Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass Parent Guide
Heavy on sexual content as expected, and more violent than expected, this zany film fails to hit its mark.
Parent Movie Review
Two weeks before her upcoming wedding, Gail (Zoey Deutch) is devastated to find her high school sweetheart and fiancé hooking up with Jennifer Aniston. When he insists it’s acceptable because Ms. Aniston is his “celebrity pass”, Gail decides that the only way to save her relationship is to find her own celebrity pass and sleep with him to even the score. Along with her best friend, Otto (Miles Gutierrez Riley), Gail heads for Los Angeles to find her desired superstar: Jon Hamm.
Things quickly spiral out of control when a chance mix-up at the airport leaves Gail in possession of a briefcase containing highly confidential information. Chaos ensues as Gail and her ever-growing group of friends race across Los Angeles in search of Jon Hamm, while ruthless criminal Ludicova (Sabrina Impacciatore) sends her henchmen after the missing briefcase.
The film is a loose, satirical take on The Wizard of Oz, poking fun at familiar Hollywood tropes while cramming nearly every over-the-top filmmaking cliché imaginable into its brisk 90-minute runtime. It genuinely feels like a group of famous actors got together, threw a pile of money at a movie, and challenged themselves to make it as ridiculous as possible. I can absolutely see this finding an audience; it just wasn't for me. I'm not a fan of intentionally over-the-top stupid humour, so this style of comedy never really clicked. The first half let me hope the film might strike the sweet spot between absurd and genuinely entertaining, but sadly it became increasingly chaotic as it went on. By the end, it felt less like a comedy and more like a full-blown spoof, reminiscent of parody films like The Starving Games from the 2010s.
As you might expect from the movie’s title, the humour is also fairly crude. Although there's no nudity, the film is packed with sexual jokes, gratuitous violence, and comically excessive gore. Surprisingly, though, there's almost no drinking or drug use, so if that's your primary concern when choosing films, this may not be an issue – although it’s not reason enough to spend your time or money on this one.
