Parent Movie Review

In this live-action adaptation of Moana, we revisit the beloved story of the adventurous daughter of the chief of Motunui as she sets sail beyond her island for the very first time to save her people. To restore life to her home, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) must return the stolen heart of the goddess Te Fiti, but first, she has to convince the larger-than-life demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to help her.

Joined by her useless pet chicken, Hei Hei, Moana crosses the ocean, battles monsters, learns the ancient art of wayfinding, connects with her ancestors, and ultimately discovers who she is. It's a story of courage, identity, and perseverance that has resonated with audiences since the original film's release ten years ago.

So...what's different about the live action? Honestly? Not much (and I mean that as a compliment).

Disney’s newest live action release is essentially a shot-for-shot remake of the animated film, just with real actors. If you were hoping for a fresh take or major story changes, or even some new dialogue, you might leave disappointed. But if you loved the original Moana, there's a good chance you'll enjoy it.

Moana is a lush, vibrant film and one of its biggest highlights is the music. The musical numbers are stunning, and the traditional Polynesian dancing brings so much life to the film. The casting also deserves praise. Seeing Polynesian actors bring these beloved characters to life feels authentic and meaningful. Representation mattered when the animated film was released, and it matters just as much seeing these stories told by real people on screen.

Something else really stood out to me that I didn’t expect: This is one of the first major family movies I've watched in a long time where the cast simply looked...human. People had natural faces, realistic bodies, and expressions that actually moved. This isn't a criticism of anyone who chooses cosmetic procedures, but I do think there's something powerful about children (especially young girls) seeing heroes who look like everyday people.

Now, I'll admit that some of the CGI and performances occasionally gave me early-2000s Disney vibes. They're a little cheesy at times, and not every effect lands perfectly. But honestly? I think that's part of the charm. It reminded me of the movies I grew up with; films that weren't trying to be flawless masterpieces or viral social media moments. They were simply fun, heartfelt adventures made for kids. Moana reminded me how enjoyable it is to watch a film that's comfortable being a little goofy, a little theatrical, and completely genuine.

If your kids loved the animated Moana, chances are they'll love this version too. The story remains almost identical, so there are no major surprises. The only thing parents may want to keep in mind is that some of the scarier moments can feel a bit more intense simply because they're portrayed with real actors, or more realistic animation. The content itself hasn't changed, it just feels a little more real.

Overall, this isn't a remake that reinvents the original. It celebrates it. And sometimes, that's exactly what a live-action remake should do.
