2010 Academy Award Winners

The 2010 Academy Awards has chosen what it considers to be the best movies of 2009. And the winners are:

Best Motion Picture of the Year: The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker and its creators also took the awards for:

Best Achievement in Directing (Kathryn Bigelow)

Best Achievement in Editing (Bob Murawski, Chris Innis)

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Mark Boal)

Best Achievement in Sound Mixing (Paul N.J. Ottosson, Ray Beckett)

Best Achievement in Sound Editing (Paul N.J. Ottosson)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role:

Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart.

Crazy Heart also received recognition for:

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song

(Crazy Heart/ T-Bone Burnett, Ryan Bingham for The Weary Kind)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role:

Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role:

Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role:

Mo’Nique for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire also won:

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published (Geoffrey Fletcher)

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the evening was Avatar, which was nominated in numerous categories including Best Picture and Best Director (for James Cameron), but was awarded only these:

Best Achievement in Cinematography (Avatar/ Mauro Fiore)

Best Achievement in Art Direction (Avatar/ Rick Carter, Robert Stromberg, Kim Sinclair)

Best Achievement in Visual Effects (Avatar/ Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham, Andy Jones)

Best Achievement in Costume Design

The Young Victoria (Sandy Powell)

Best Achievement in Makeup

Star Trek (Barney Burman, Mindy Hall, Joel Harlow)

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year

Up (Pete Docter)

This Disney /Pixar animation was also honored with:

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score

(Up/ Michael Giacchino)

Best Documentary, Features

The Cove (Louie Psihoyos, Fisher Stevens)
