Predator: Killer of Killers Parent Guide
Gruesome but well made.
Parent Movie Review
The alien Predators are discerning hunters, preferring to take only the most violent, dangerous, and lethal prey. In that regard, Earth has proved a worthwhile hunting ground.
This film follows the story of three humans chosen for the hunt. First, a Viking warrior (Lindsay laVanchy) finds her quest for bloody revenge interrupted – but she’s not about to shrink from a fight, no matter how huge or alien the opponent. Another Predator visits feudal Japan, tracking a ninja (Louis Ozawa Chanchien) who seeks a different kind of revenge against his samurai brother. Finally, a hard-luck US naval aviator in WWII meets something in the air over his fleet that certainly wasn’t built by human hands.
I love an anthology. The script trims out all the fat and only runs the prime pieces of every story. You get all the creativity and action packed into a 20-minute package (roughly) per character, and all three stories feel distinct and well-considered. No one has time to wear out their welcome; there isn’t any bloated exposition; we simply pick up the characters in the middle of their own personal storylines and throw them into a cage match with a bloodthirsty alien. It’s fabulously entertaining for adult genre fans.
Animation is also a great choice for this franchise, and director Dan Trachtenberg has made the most of it. It’s not quite perfect for every shot, but the stylization chosen by the animators works beautifully for most of the film and captures the action cleanly. No motion blur or shaky camera work to hide what’s going on, which is good, because the movie is mostly people killing each other. Wouldn’t want to miss out, right?
As you should have guessed, this isn’t a good choice for sensitive audiences. While the film avoids alcohol and sex, there are a few profanities, and the entire plot revolves around gruesome murder. The more creative the better – for the story, at least. Queasier audiences may feel differently about how many people this movie cuts into itty bitty little pieces.
I had a wonderful time, to be honest. Like I said, I love an anthology (and I’m an adult fan of horror movies). Killer of Killers is a brutally gory little triptych, each story a shiny pearl of bone in the red meat it’s swimming in, and nearly as macabre as that makes it sound. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
