May Movies Offer a Taste of What’s Releasing This Summer
The Avengers: Age of Ultron earned over $200 million on the foreign market before even coming to North America. On Thursday, the highly anticipated sequel brought in $27.6 million—up from Marvel’s The Avengers $18.7 million. Now the studio is waiting to see if the film will smash box office expectations this weekend.
The film also officially launched the summer blockbuster season. Here’s what you can expect to see in theaters for the rest of the month.
After winning a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Wild, Reese Witherspoon plays a uptight Texas police officer in the comedy Hot Pursuit. Her character is assigned the duty of protecting a drug-dealer’s widow played by Sofia Vergara. The film opens May 8.
Mel Gibson won’t be featured in the R-rated Mad Max: Fury Road film releasing on May 15. Tom Hardy who plays the former highway patrolman in a post apocalyptic world filled with bloody thirsty gangs will take the lead role in this grimy, futuristic film.

But after a mishap between some members of the group and the public, the singers enter a worldwide competition that has never been won by Americans in hopes of regaining their standing in the performing world.
George Clooney plays an aging action hero/scientist in the futuristic film Tomorrowland. Clooney teams up with Britt Robertson (The Longest Ride) who stars as a troubled teen who travels with the scientist through time and space. However their travels have a direct impact on the world and themselves.
An earthquake demolishes the California coastline in the drama San Andreas. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Paul Giamatti and Ioan Gruffudd. The film is currently scheduled to release May 29. However Warner Bros. are considering delaying the release in light of the recent Nepal earthquake. Along with letting viewers know how they can contribute to the relief efforts, the studio’s PSA campaign will also offer safety and preparation tips for natural disasters.
