When Danish painter Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) asks her husband to stand in as a female model, she awakens within Einer (Eddie Redmayne) a desire to live his life as a woman. Together they create the alter-ego Lili Elbe. But overtime Einer decides he/she wants the change to be permanent and undergoes pioneering surgery to make that happen.
