When Karen Dinesen (Meryl Streep) emigrates to Africa she is hoping to build a new and happy life. But her marriage of convenience to Bror Blixin (Klaus Maria Brandauer) proves anything but. And her romantic affair with a Denys Hatton (Robert Redford) leaves her passion for commitment unrequited.

Violence: A man discusses his safari-hunting job. A lion attacks and kills an ox. A woman chases the lion away with a bullwhip. A lion and lioness are later shot and killed after gorging on a dead animal. A woman has to have thorns removed from her bloody back. Characters suffer from injury and disease. Guns are fired into the air during a celebration. Men scuffle and a woman slaps a man’s face. A woman watches as her factory burns to the ground. Characters discuss a man who is killed in an accident.

Sexual Content: Much of the movie deals with adultery and infidelity on the part of several characters. A couple is shown in bed together with some shoulder and back nudity. Other scenes include undressing and kissing, and imply sexual activity follows. A man admits to infidelity after his wife is diagnosed with a venereal disease. Brief shots of bare-breasted native women are shown. A man hints at his relationship with his African housekeeper. A man washes a woman’s hair in a sexually suggestive scene.

Language: The script contains a handful of mild and moderate profanities, some sexually suggestive dialogue and some insulting comments.

Alcohol / Drug Use: Smoking and drinking are frequently portrayed among main characters as well as secondary ones. Characters are often invited to have a drink. Some characters drink to deal with stress.
