News About "The Cloverfield Paradox"
What Happened to Cloverfield 3?
This third installment in the Cloverfield franchise has had a wild ride. At first it had no name. Then it was called God Particle or just Untitled Cloverfield Anthology Movie. Then it was unexpectedly sold by Paramount to Netflix, meaning it skipped a theatrical release and landed on the cable movie streaming service. Available right after Super Bowl (Feb. 4, 2018), the much anticipated sequel to the successful 2016 thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane and the not-so-great 2008 monster movie Cloverfield, this sic-fi has proved to be a disappointing flop.
Despite a strong cast (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Brühl, David Oyelowo, Chris O’Dowd and Zhang Ziyi), the script appears to be too paradoxical to provide an intelligible plot. It focuses on five astronauts aboard the space station who are experimenting with particle science (hence the first title) to try and save the world from an apocalyptic energy crisis. Unfortunately, they end up launching themselves onto a journey through time and space --an adventure almost as grueling as the one the film has traveled.
Parents should be aware that the fictional tale includes lots of gory details and graphic violence.
Considering the poor reaction Cloverfield Paradox has received from critics and viewers, I'm sure Paramount is happy that it handed this project off to someone else. If you are a disappointed fan of the series, and/or an admirer of director J.J. Abrams' work, you can still give the movie a look -- while taking advantage of Netflix' lower prices.
