Could 2015 Be Another Year of Remakes and Sequels at the Cinema?

The live action movie Cinderella opens in theaters on March 13, indicating once again that fresh ideas appear to be a sparse commodity in theaters where sequels and remakes already dominate the big screens.

Movie marquees in 2014 were plastered with titles that included a “2”—Rio 2, How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Dumb and Dumber To. Then there were the sequels—Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. Audiences will get a look at The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 this November.

But Cinderella and Mockingjay Part 2 aren’t the only remakes or sequels in the works for 2015. Universal Studios is releasing Jurassic World on June 12. The movie picks up on events 22 years after Jurassic Park and stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt as park staff who work at a new exhibit designed to boost attendance at the park.

Marvel and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation are reimaging Fantastic Four with a quartet of fresh new faces including Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan. The four young scientists become superhuman after one of their experiments go awry leaving each of them with new powers that allow them to save the world. The reboot is set to release August 7.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation is also behind the remake of the Frankenstein story set to release in October. Daniel Radcliffe grows out his hair to play the troubled young assistant Igor in the movie Victor Frankenstein. James McAvoy takes on the role of medical student Victor Von Frankenstein in this origin story that leads to the legend that lives on today.
