Girls’ Clothing—Sexualizing At A Very Young Age

Are we surprised? A recent study published by Springer Science+Business Media reveals that 29% of clothing made for girls (we’re not even talking teenagers here… these are “little” girls) features sexualized characteristics. The abstract accompanying the study discusses objectification theory and how sexualizing characteristics in girl’s clothing acts as a possible socializing influence that may contribute to the development of self-objectification in preteen girls. This condition can lead women to evaluate their own bodies according to narrow, often sexualized, standards of attractiveness.
