Celebrate the Glorious Gooeyness of National S’More Day

If you’ve ever bitten into the ooey, gooey deliciousness of melted chocolate and marshmallow squished between two graham crackers then you know today is an important celebration—National S’more Day!

The first recipe for “Some-Mores” appears in a 1927 Girl Scout publication called Tramping and Trailing. In 1956 a recipe for S’Mores was published with directions for assembling the camping treat.

Now Hershey’s (the chocolate bar made famous by S’mores) online site lists over a dozen fun variations of the treat including a S’mores Sundae and S’mores Cookies. You can also find recipes for S’more Pops and for the more up scale taste buds, there are S’more Eclairs.

S’mores always taste best when your camping but if you can’t make it to the great outdoors today, you can make this indoor version of the treat. Then pop in one of these camping movies and it will be almost like being there.

A cute and charming young Lindsay Lohan plays a set of twins who discover they were separated at birth. After meeting at summer camp in The Parent Trap, they decide to switch things up in an effort to get their parents back together. But first they have to get rid of Dad’s new girlfriend while on a family camping trip. In the 1961 version of the movie, Hayley Mills plays both girls.

No one wants to play an instrument with sticky fingers, but there is still room for fun and good food at Camp Rock where aspiring musicians sing and dance their way through the summer. This Disney Channel Original Movie might be harder to find but it offers lots of fun tunes and little content.

Man of the House is a throwback to the 1960s when Disney released a host of different movies starring Dean Jones. In this 1995 movie, Chevy Chase plays a man trying to win over the son of his new girlfriend. He hopes that joining the Indian Guides will be a bonding experience for the two of them.

Some S’Mores might be a good thing to calm the family tensions in the 1962 movie Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation. James Stewart stars as a harried banker yearning for a family vacation. But his dream of relaxing gets sidetracked when his wife plans a huge family vacation.

In The Sandlot, a group of boys introduce the new kid on the block to S’Mores along with the joys of playing baseball at the vacant lot.
