Britain’s Iron Lady Dies at 87

Margaret Thatcher, the formidable force in British politics, passed away today after suffering a stroke. The outspoken and determined public servant grew up in a home above one of her father’s grocery stores. But her humble beginnings and the fact that she was a female didn’t deter her from seeking the United Kingdom’s highest elected office. As Britain’s first, and so far only, female prime minister, she earned the respect of many of her countrymen but also faced criticism from those who opposed her strong style of leadership, her blunt comments and her monetary policies during the country’s economic challenges. Eventually she was ousted by her own party.

Actress Meryl Streep portrays this powerful political figure in the movie The Iron Lady. The role earned Streep an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
