10 Family Films That Celebrate Siblings

Jurassic World is about more than dinosaurs. Like Jurassic Park, the film also explores sibling relationships. Indominus Rex eats his sibling but Zach and Gray are two brothers who develop a more amiable relationship by the time the credits roll.

Whether you have a single sibling or a whole gaggle of brothers and sisters, you know these family relationships can come with the good and the bad. But usually there is no one who knows you as well as your sibling. Here are 10 other movies that feature brother and sister relationships.

Pride & Prejudice - Elizabeth Bennet lives with four sisters in a crumbling and cluttered mansion cared for by some haggard servants. Her father may be a titled Englishman but a title is about all he has. So marrying off his daughters to wealthy young men is a must. While they don’t have all the privileges of some of their peers, these sisters love to talk about their future prospects and are eager to watch out for one another.

Dan in Real Life - Dan is a single dad with three busy daughters. On his way to a family reunion he meets Marie between the shelves of a quaint little bookstore. However just as he is about to tell his family about Marie, his brother introduces his girlfriend who happens to be the same woman. This movie explores the give and take of adult sibling relationships in the middle of a complicated situation.

In Her Shoes - Even as adults some of us can’t move away from our childhood roles in the family. Maggie is one of those who has seemingly refused to grow up and accept responsibility. Her older sister Rose has spent years hovering over her, stepping in to shield her younger sister from the harsher realities of life. But now she’s tired of bailing her sister out. But the girls both get a lesson in sisterly love when they end up at the home of their estranged grandmother. The adult story line and some content concerns make this film a more suitable choice for older audiences.

The Blind Side - Michael Oher and S.J. Tuohy don’t look anything alike. Michael is tall, black and muscular. S.J. is short, blond and puny by comparison. But the two of them become brothers after Michael is taken into the Tuohy’s home. Their relationship proves that being a sibling is as much about love as it is about blood.

Lilo & Stitch - Two sisters are left to make it on their own after the death of their parents. But Nani discovers it isn’t easy to keep a job, run a household and take care of her younger sister, especially when Lilo attracts trouble faster than flowers attract bees.

Race to Witch Mountain - Sara and Seth are siblings that possess supernatural powers and they are trying to get home. While they look like average kids, they are actually aliens who need to get to Witch Mountain in order to return to their planet.

Sophia the First: Once Upon a Princess - When Sophia’s mother marries King Roland II, the young commoner becomes the step sister of James and Amber. But Amber isn’t happy about welcoming a new sibling into the royal castle. This story about sibling tensions in blended families is aimed at the under eight crowd.

Little Women—The 1994 film adaptation of this classic novel stars Winona Ryder, Trini Alvarado, Samantha Mathis, and Claire Danes as sisters living alone with their mother while their father is away fighting in the Civil War.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events - A group of siblings have to stick together after their parents die in order to protect their inheritance from the evil Count Olaf. Jim Carey plays Olaf as well as several other characters in this dark comedy based on the Lemony Snicket novels.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Set during the WWII bombing raids on the cities of Great Britain, the story of the Pevensie siblings follows the youngsters to the countryside where they are sent to live with a complete stranger. Their adventure begins when they find a wardrobe that takes them to the magical kingdom of Narnia.
