Parent Movie Review

Sofia (voice of Ariel Winter) was merely a commoner living in the shadow of the castle until King Roland (voice of Travis Willingham) married her mother Miranda (voice of Sara Ramirez). Then the star of Disney’s junior princess franchise became Sofia the First. As a newly crowned royal in Sofia The First: Once Upon a Princess, she had to learn to get along with her new siblings Princess Amber (voice of Darcy Rose Byrnes) and Prince James (voice of Zach Callison) as well as embracing the finer points of being a princess.

But of course that’s not enough from the company where dreams really do come true. Now in the next made-for-TV movie, the little redhead is off on an adventure in Sofia the First: The Floating Palace.

When this royal family goes on holiday, they take an entire castle along in the form of a floating houseboat. Arriving at their destination, they drop anchor in Mermaid Cove where a curious little mermaid named Oona (voice by Kiernan Shipka) gets her tail tangled in some ropes. Sofia helps set her free and as a result is granted a special power from the magical amulet the princess wears around her neck. This allows Sofia to change into a mermaid the minute her toes touch the water. (Luckily for her, her legs reappear as soon as she is back on solid ground.)

Unfortunately misunderstanding occurs when Oona is kidnapped by Cedric the evil sorcerer (voice of Jess Harnell). He is trying to steal Oona’s magical shell crown. When the little girl goes missing, Oona’s mother threatens to sink the King’s floating vessel unless her daughter is found and freed. Luckily for Sofia, Ariel (voice of Jodi Benson) shows up to help set things right.

The film contains the kind of typical cartoon peril you’d expect, as well as a few moments that may be particularly scary for young viewers when Oona’s mom whips up a storm to capsize the palace. But that doesn’t last long since the animation is only 50-minutes long. And in that much time it must also come around to a happily-ever-after ending where Sofia learns about the importance of working together as a family in order to solve problems.

This movie premiered on November 24, 2014. It is now available on DVD, which means your little princess can watch it again and again and again.
