Tortured by the discovery of his wife's unfaithfulness, novelist Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) secludes himself in a remote cabin on a heavily wooded plot outside of town. There he meets a mysterious stranger (John Turturro) who claims the writer has been stealing his work. His introduction also coincides with some grisly happenings in the neighborhood.
