Why is Ricki and the Flash rated PG-13? Ricki and the Flash is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for thematic material, brief drug content, sexuality and language.

Violence: The script describes a suicide attempt with sleeping pills. Frequent scenes depict verbal sparring between family members and acquaintances. A character uses another person’s credit card without their permission. Reference is made to an accidental drug overdose.

Sexual Content: An unmarried man and woman become passionate and begin to undress as they get into bed—at this point the scene ends. Men are shown shirtless in a couple of scenes. An unmarried man and woman wake up in bed together—we see her bare back and side. A woman is seen in a bath towel after showering. A man puts his head in the lap of his ex-wife.

Language: Infrequent scatological slang, crude anatomical terms and sexual references are heard. Other mild profanities and religious terms are used.

Alcohol / Drug Use: Marijuana use is implied after a character discovers some in a home and we later see characters appearing to be under the influence and complaining about being hungry. The marijuana use is somewhat comedic and contributes to a positive outcome within a family conflict. Alcohol use is depicted throughout—one character appears inebriated in various scenes.
