Why is The Past rated PG-13? The Past is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for mature thematic material and brief strong language.


Confrontations between adults, and between parents and children, include angry words, withheld forgiveness, and pushing and shoving. An angry woman yells at a child and locks him in his room for punishment: he tries to get out by kicking the door. A child accidentally cuts his finger with a kitchen knife. Characters talk about a woman in a coma, and some mysterious scratches on her stomach. Depression is mentioned. A suicide is discussed, including some details about the ingested poison. An immigrant works in a country illegally. Children threaten to run away from home. Characters lie or withhold information from others. A woman wears a medical brace for an injured wrist.

Sexual Content:

An un-wed pregnancy is discussed. Abortion is mentioned. Characters engage in an adulterous relationship (nothing physical is shown). Characters kiss and embrace. A child talks about needing to go to the bathroom.


A sexual expletive is used twice. Other mild and moderate profanities are uttered.
