Why is Ben-Hur 2016 rated PG-13? Ben-Hur 2016 is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for sequences of violence and disturbing images.

Violence: Violent portrayals are frequent in this tale of Roman oppression and Jewish rebellion. Bows and arrows, swords, spears, knives and catapults are used as weapons in large battles and local fights. Characters are shot with arrows, flogged with whips, covered in burning tar, manhandled, imprisoned and forced into slavery. Many of these atrocities are depicted with some blood and detail. Others disturbing incidents are described verbally. Galley slaves are chained to their boat, beaten by their masters and crushed, burned and drowned during a sea battle. Ships ram one another until they are broken into pieces. Competitors and some innocent spectators at a chariot race are smashed against walls, thrown from their vehicles and run over by horses. Deaths and bloody injuries result. Horses also suffer injury and death from this sport. Characters are threatened at knife point. Characters suffering from a terminal illness are seen with disfiguring sores. Many gory or drowned corpses are seen. Characters are crucified and their bruised and broken bodies are shown hanging on crosses. A character is stabbed by a spear and blood gushes from his wound. Crowds riot.

Sexual Content: Couples embrace and kiss. A married couple is shown in bed together (his shoulders are bare). A woman’s dress is torn during a scuffle with soldiers and her back is exposed. The abuse of women is briefly mentioned. Several male characters are covered only by loin cloths. Selling sex for money is implied.

Language: Terms of deity are infrequently used as expletives.

Alcohol/Drug Use: Wine is drunk in social settings and for celebrations. Guests at a house party are shown drinking – some to excess. It is implied one character is suffering from a hangover.
