Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mabatha-Raw) was born of a Royal Navy Admiral (Matthew Goode) and his black West Indies' mistress, and then raised by her great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) in England. The young woman, who bears the color of her mother, now struggles to be accepted in an aristocratic society where her "type" is usually allocated to the class of slave.
