Why is 47 Ronin rated PG-13? 47 Ronin is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense sequences of violence and action, some disturbing images, and thematic elements.

Violence: Themes of taking one’s life to restore honor (in other words “honorable” suicide) are throughout this movie. In two scenes men kill themselves with a knife and then another man decapitates their bodies with a sword. (The decapitations are not shown, except for one human-like giant who has his head cut off during a battle.) Some decapitated heads are held up for display. A big beast attacks a group of men; one eventually stabs it and kills it. A woman, who is a witch, pierces a man’s skin and extracts a large spider. It appears a man is raping a woman (both are clothed) but it isn’t really happening. A man is beaten with sticks after impersonating a Samurai warrior. A man is stabbed, another shot. A man is beaten and then stomped upon by his opponent. Men cut their thumbs in order to place a blood fingerprint on a document. Battles involving swords are seen throughout.

Sexual Content: A man imagines seeing a woman raped by another man (no nudity is shown). Men are seen without shirts. Characters discussion a man being born out of wedlock.

Language: None noted.

Alcohol / Drug Use:Infrequent alcohol use.
