Parent Movie Review

Mom’s home cookin’ used to rule at the Southern Cross, a small New York restaurant; but since daughter Amanda Shelton (Sarah Michelle Gellar) has inherited the kitchen, only the most loyal patrons can stomach the monotonous menu. That is until an unusual man at the local market talks Amanda into buying a mysterious crab. From the frequent closeups of the creature, we’re led to believe the crustacean has some ol’ black magic in his shell. Not only does he make Tom Bartlett (Sean Patrick Flanery), a suave restaurant manager, appear in Amanda’s ordinary life, he also does amazing things for her culinary creativity.

Simply Irresistible - Official Site The writers emphasize that food is the best way to a man’s heart. Even the smell of Amanda’s cooking has Tom spellbound and his assistant and boss find themselves lusting after her treats, which appear to possess aphrodisiac properties. Whenever they consume one of her pastries, they start moaning and groaning sensuously. But things are really left up in the air when Tom finds himself literally floating, after indulging in one of Amanda’s concoctions mixed with a kiss. Suddenly he becomes convinced she is a witch, but not until they have sex in the kitchen under a romantic fog.

Simply Irresistible - Official Site Sarah Michelle Gellar has bewitched many times previous to this film, playing the supernatural character in the television series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer. She has also starred in some other teen grabbing movies like Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Cruel Intentions, all of which have left a bad taste in my mouth. This film’s content may not be as intense, but nonetheless, its obvious parallel between an appetite for food and sex may leave parents feeling queasy.

Simply Irresistible - Official Site For all the passion over the menu, this film does a poor job of convincing us that we should care if Tom and Amanda get together or not. Tom seems more obsessed with Amanda’s food than her personality. One can’t help but wonder what will happen when the spell is broken, and everyone, including the audience, goes home hungry.

Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Updated
