Momentary shock and disbelief engulf Mathew Cuthbert (Richard Farnsworth), a soft-spoken bachelor and his sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst), after they decide to adopt a sturdy boy old enough to help with the chores on their farm, yet young enough to be raised with their values.
