Why Is The Tale of Despereaux Rated Not Rated?
This animated children’s film offers a relatively insightful and complex plot, but may frighten young viewers with scary moments and “jump” scenes. The hero and other characters are often in peril. Humans chase after rodents with various weapons. In “Ratworld” it is very dark and rats are seen eating decomposed food. Rats intimidate and bully a mouse. A mouse is brought into a large arena where a cat is released and repeatedly attempts to attack him. A human is later brought into the same arena and is about to be attacked/eaten by the rats. A bottle of what appears to be wine falls into a pot of soup and improves its taste.

Rod Gustafson has worked in various media industries since 1977. He founded Parent Previews in 1993, and today continues to write and broadcast the reviews in newspapers, on radio and (of course) on the Internet. He currently serves as the President of the Alberta Association for Media Awareness, a provincial non-profit society. He also authors a regular column for
