Why Is Syriana Rated R?
Violence is sparse in this R-rated film, but what is included is intense. The most disturbing scene has a man tortured by having his fingernails pulled off (we see a quick glimpse and the bloody results). A small boy is accidentally electrocuted in a swimming pool, and a couple of other scenes show people being killed by explosions—including one initiated by a suicide bomber. Close to two-dozen sexual expletives are heard, half of these from one angry man, and a couple of others from a husband angry with his wife. Other incidental content includes some smoking and social drinking, and a man asking another if he has tried MDMA (Ecstasy). No sexual content was seen.
