Why Is It’s Kind of a Funny Story Rated PG-13?
Violence: The theme of this movie surrounds a teen boy and other characters that have or are contemplating suicide. One teen character imagines jumping from a bridge. Another youth has scars on her wrists and cheek, and admits to cutting herself. Mild verbal altercations are depicted.
Sexual Content: A teen boy looks at a teen girl’s clothed breasts. Teen characters begin embracing and fondling on a bed, however they are interrupted before further activity takes place. A boy and girl kiss a few times. A boy is shown drawing his naked girlfriend (an art easel blocks everything except her head and shoulders). A boy jokingly asks a man if he raped a penguin. A crude drawing of male genitals is seen.
Language: Profanities are infrequent, but they do include a sexual expletive, rude finger gesture, crude terms for sex and anatomy, and a couple of scatological terms.
Drugs/Alcohol: The use of prescription anti-depressants is discussed.
Other: A boy vomits whenever he is stressed (which we see a few times).
