The various shades of religious commitment and motivations are expertly (and respectfully) explored in the film Lilies of the Field, which follows the efforts of a group of German Catholic nuns to persuade their local Spanish speaking congregation, the white business community, and a black Baptist handy-man (played by Sidney Poitier), to help them build a chapel.
