I took my 10 yr. old son & his BF to see this yesterday and although it was a long movie and the English spoken was not something they fully understood they were very interested in it. After the movie we discussed it in great detail and I was completely blown away by there keen observations, to them it was so foreign the hatred for African Americans, they were happy that they did not live in that time but now have a better understanding of the political process and why it’s important to fight for what you believe in. My son was stunned to hear about the fear of allowing women the right to vote. We talk a lot about politics and world events so he understands more than most 10 year olds. I think the importance of this film outweighs the rating. Yes they show some pretty graphic war scenes, but for them to understand what WAR is those images are necessary. I didn’t feel that the scenes were unrealistic or overly used, it was balanced. You can’t explain our history without the images. I wouldn’t take younger children to see it but 10 year olds I believe it’s fine, my son is very interested in politics especially since we just had an election and he remembers the historic day when Barack Obama was sworn in as President. So this movie comes at an important time!!!
